MUTZ, Justin McClain “Jay”, 85, has gone to meet the rest of his family. God chose him to join them on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 10:30 p.m. He went peacefully at home. Jay was born to Felix and Eva Mutz on August 14, 1930 in New Orleans. He has joined his parents and the rest of his siblings, Herbert Mutz and Rose Mutz Haase and his brother-in-law, Wilbur Haase. Jay is survived by his friend, companion, and loving wife Patricia (Pat) Doyle (Hastings) Mutz, sister-in-law, Jean (Doyle) Kramer, nephew, Marty (Marsha) Haase, Michael (Kathy) Haase and niece, Linda Haase Montero, step-children, Michael Hastings and Susan (Hastings) Secord (Mark), cousins Fran Butler and Cathy Pepper and also a host of grand nieces, grand nephews, step grand-children, step nieces and step nephews. He also is especially missed by his adoring Shih-Tzu, “Angel”.
Jay was a past resident of New Orleans and Chalmette before Katrina and was a long-time member of Christ Lutheran Church in New Orleans. He moved to River Ridge 10 years ago and attended Faith Lutheran Church in Harahan, LA.
Jay was very devoted to the National Guard and The Krewe of Endymion. He proudly served his country in the Army National Guard for 33 years and retired as Command Sergeant Major. While in the Guard, he was Executive President of the Louisiana National Guard Enlisted Association (LANGEA) and originated/organized a newsletter for 6,000 members. He was also the President and Officer of the Krewe of Endymion for many, many years. Jay even taught roller skating and organized a carnival parade on skates.
He was a very generous, hard-working individual who gave tirelessly of himself and his time. Jay leaves behind a great number of devoted friends, with a very special remembrance to Mickey Brondum and San Nicholas, both long-time friends with whom Jay had a very close relationship for many years. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humor, especially to all the women he called “Alice”. Jay attended Greenwalt Adult Day Center for 8 months and enjoyed their company as much as they enjoyed his company.
Jay wanted his remains to be sent to LSU Health Sciences Center for Research in the hopes that he could continue to help others. Memorial Services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in April; date will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations in his name to Faith Lutheran Church, 300 Colonial Club Drive, Harahan, LA, 70123, or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
